gallery-copper-roofUnderstanding your roof warranty is an important part of getting the best value and peace of mind for your roof investment. Take the time before the project begins to understand your warranty so you will be able to relax and enjoy your new roof knowing you made a good decision with your purchase.

What is a Roof Warranty?

A roof warranty covers the materials and work done on your roofing project. It isn’t insurance, so it won’t cover, for example, storm damage, but it should make sure that your investment in your new roof means a roof that looks and functions like the sales material promised, and that your roof installation was done correctly.

Different Warranties Depending on Type of Roofing Project

When you have roof work done, the roof warranty on your project will vary depending on the type, size and scope of the project and on which manufacturer provides your roofing materials. In general, a full new roof or a reroof will have a longer warranty for materials and workmanship than a limited repair job that does not replace your entire roof.

Whatever the project, before you settle on a final plan, your roofing contractor should explain your warranty to you so that you understand your protection and have a chance to ask questions.

Here are things you should know about roof warranties:

Roofing Materials: Roofing materials carry a warranty from the manufacturer. These warranties will vary by manufacturer, and generally by type of roofing material. Roofing materials warranties, in general, last from 10-30 years, depending on the type of materials. You will get a copy of this warranty with your roofing contract. The roofing manufacturer may also have more information on their website, such as contact information, forms for a claim and so on. You may also be able to purchase full system warranty coverage that includes most or all of your roof components, or buy “lifetime” coverage for extended protection.

Roof Installation: The contractor should follow the manufacturer’s installation specifications exactly so the product will perform as it was designed. The contractor warranty for a new roof or a replacement roof warranties that the work was carried out properly and without defects.

Because our work is top quality, Prestige is able to offer an exceptional warranty on our work to our residential roof installation clients. Generally, on a full new residential roof, our workmanship will usually be warrantied for a period of 5-10 years, depending on the project. (This warranty period may not apply to partial replacements or roof repairs)

Roof Repairs: Roof repairs can involve everything from replacing a few tiles to repairing a major section of your existing roof. Since the scope of work can vary widely, there’s no one warranty that will apply. It will depend on the individual project. Small projects may have no or a 1 year warranty. Most major repair work, however, would probably be warrantied for a longer period, perhaps 2-5 years. Very small projects, like replacing a few missing or broken tiles, may not carry a warranty.

Commercial Roofs: Commercial roofing projects can span many types, from flat roofing, using materials like PVC, TPO or KEE single ply roofing membranes, to tile, metal or other materials. The manufacturer’s warranty will apply to cover the roof materials. Commercial roof installation warranties generally start around 1-2 years, but as with all roofing installations, the warranty will vary depending on the type of roof.

Common Questions People Have about their Roof Warranty

Warranties can differ widely. You will likely have two warranties, one with your manufacturer and one with your roof installer. It’s good to know the major points of each and ask questions for any special situation you may be facing.

Below are answers to some typical questions we get from our customers.

Will the warranty cover every problem?

Warranties generally cover defects in the materials that cause them to malfunction or to age prematurely. The manufacturer may not cover roofing materials that are damaged, for example, by a tree falling on them. Be sure to understand what the warranty covers and doesn’t cover. Always carry the appropriate level of homeowner’s insurance to protect against the costs of accidental damage.

Are there any reasons my warranty would not be valid?

Roofing materials that were installed incorrectly may not be covered. Protect yourself by choosing a qualified, licensed roofer. A professional roofer always follows the installation requirements of the manufacturer to assure that your roof will perform as designed and your warranty will not be voided by shoddy workmanship. If you live in an area subject to extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, be sure you understand any carve-outs or exceptions the manufacturer may have in their warranty coverage.

Is the contractor warranty the same as the manufacturer warranty?

No, the manufacturer’s warranty will be responsible for defective roofing materials that fail during the warranty period, usually due to design or manufacturing flaws. Your contractor warranties that his work is sound and that the roof was installed correctly. During the warranty period, if your roof does not perform as it should (for example, it develops a leak without any apparent external cause of damage), your contractor should repair your roof under the warranty. If he finds the roof materials at fault, the manufacturer would provide replacement materials at no cost. Call your contractor first for any problems so he can help determine the best resolution for any problems.

What if I sell my home?

Most warranties are transferable to a new owner. Be sure to check with your warranty company for any paperwork requirements. There may be a limit on the number of times a warranty can be transferred.

Prestige Roofing Remembers Humble Beginnings

This December, Prestige Roofing turned twenty years old! We recently took a little time to celebrate our anniversary and to appreciate hard work and dedication of the entire Prestige Roofing team over the years. Of course, we got to reminiscing, so here are some memories of our early days as recalled by co-founder, Tom Romney:

The Very Beginning: Dec 1995

“After managing another roofing company in Las Vegas, Jack and I decided we wanted to build a roofing company of our own so we started Prestige Roofing. Our first job was a $700 reroof on a small garage. We used the money to buy a fax machine and a file cabinet. We actually worked out of my house for a month before moving into our first office near Pecos and Craig Road.

For 3 months the two of us did all the work before we had enough money to hire a few employees. In those early days we did mostly small residential re-roofing projects with a little new construction custom home roofing sprinkled in. We bought a manual sheet metal brake and started dabbling in small metal fascia work.

The Early Years: Aug 1998

Three years later, we had grown to have enough equipment and employees that we ran out of space and had to find a new home. I guess we were feeling pretty optimistic, because we went way out on a limb and purchased our current building near Cheyenne and Clayton in North Las Vegas. It was a little too large for us to begin with so we rented half of it out. We continued to grow and by Aug of 2000 we took over the entire building.

Hard Times in the Roofing Business and Lessons Learned

Through the recession years we had to hunker down and grind out a living, but we were able to hold together and keep all of our key personnel. During those years, we learned to appreciate every single client even more than before. And we learned that the best way to survive hard times is to work harder than ever to make sure our product was of the very best quality. This way, when a client needs a roof, they will think of us first.

Over the years we have earned the reputation of being a high quality company who strives to always deliver what we promise. In addition to the reroofing work that got us going and is still a big part of our business, we have installed roofs on schools, churches, shopping centers and the most exotic custom homes in Southern Nevada. In addition to all of the standard roofing materials, we have become experienced specialists in custom projects using materials like prefinished steel, copper, and zinc roofs and siding, as well as custom tile roofing hand-built using 200 year old antique clay tile salvage from buildings in France and Italy.

The Prestige Roofing Family

An important part of the success of any firm is the dedication and hard work of the staff who are on the front lines and get the jobs done every day, no matter what. We have always tried to provide a solid and stable career opportunity for all of our employees, many of whom have been with us for 15 years or better. We have watched each other’s families grow up and we’ve rooted for each other when someone got sick. Jack and I have enjoyed being a part of their lives and we look forward to sharing many more years of hard work and fun with them.

Looking Forward to Twenty More Years

Las Vegas has come a long way since 1995 when it was still a pretty small city.  One thing we’ve learned over the years is that Las Vegas never stops and it’s continuing to grow and change all the time. We plan to grow and change with it and continue to offer the highest quality roofing solutions in town. As we end 2015, we are looking forward to the future and to continuing to be one of the premier roofing contractors for Southern Nevada.”

This week Prestige is keeping the momentum going by attending the 2014 International Roofing Expo. Last week we hit up the Las Vegas Home Show, with a booth for our business and staff on-hand to meet curious customers and potential clients. This event gathers the biggest names in the roofing industry well….under one roof!

While last week’s convention was one for homeowners, remodeling companies, and both internal and external home repair, the 2014 International Roofing Expo is all about roofs and roofers. Prestige Roofing of Las Vegas will have staff on hand at the show. While we may not be running a booth this time around, our dedicated roofing personnel will be networking with similar businesses, learning the latest in roofing techniques and materials from businesses all over the U.S.

The 2014 International Roofing Expo is hosted by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), one of the construction industry’s oldest trade associations, representing roofing contractors worldwide. This expo represents the NRCA’s 127th annual convention, and will be held from February 26 to February 28, 2014 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center here in Las Vegas, NV. Look for Prestige Roofing representatives in the convention center! For more information on the 2014 International Roofing Expo, visit their website.

The Super Spring Home Expo, as it’s known, hosted by Plus Events and sponsored by the Las Vegas Review Journal, will be held at the Cashman Convention Center on North Las Vegas Blvd.

Prestige Roofing Las Vegas will have an exhibitor booth on the show floor, and our representatives will be available over the course of the event, networking with other businesses in the area, learning the latest new regulations and roofing techniques, and ready to answer your questions about our quality Las Vegas roofing services.

Events such as Home Expo Las Vegas are extremely important to local business such as ours. It gives us a chance to not only to network with businesses from outside Las Vegas, but also to explore new business avenues, meet face-to-face with some of the industry’s biggest names, and get attention from potential future customers interested in roof repair or replacement for their home or business. The expo will host hundreds of exhibitors and allow attendees to browse their wares, purchase goods and services, and get in on the spring fever sensation.

Roofing is our specialty of course, but Home Expo Las Vegas itself covers everything from paint and plaster to pools and patios, with roofing being simply one element of the complete home improvement that the expo caters to. Nonetheless our representatives will be at the expo, ready to discuss new roofing opportunities with fellow business owners and potential customers alike.
